W(e are )here: Mapping the Human Experience

In the Spring of 2008, Intermedia Arts and Solutions Twin Cities teamed up to creatively explore the intersections of communication, technology, and aesthetics. This unique multi-media exhibit invited people to explore and interact with the information around them through data visualization, artistic expression, and interactive installations.

Recent developments in technology are expanding the ways we communicate the concept of "where." Online mapping and info-graphic applications are allowing artists, amateurs, and armchair cartographers to chart the intangibility of "place," etching their own impressions, emotions, and experiences onto the physical world around them. Embracing this new paradigm, the artists in this exhibit charted unique territories while working towards the development of an emerging visual language that connects place, moment, and emotion across varied scales. Where is expanding. W(e are )here.

Solutions Twin Cities, founded by young designers Troy Gallas and Colin Kloecker, creates spaces for exploring new ideas & drawing awareness to existing solutions.

The Psychogeographic Map Making Party joined Solutions Twin Cities at Intermedia Arts for a psychogeographic walking tour & map-making party. People formed small groups and set out on foot in search of unique insights into the urban fabric of the surrounding Uptown neighborhoods. Utilizing Google Earth, a projector, and a wall sized "canvas,” the groups then began to layer their experiences during the walk over a projected representation of the city. When the projection was taken away, we were left with a psychogeographic map of Uptown that communicated our collective experience.
