Viva Las Roots
Performance Run: October 29-30 & November 2-5, 2011; 7PM

Intermedia Arts presented Viva Las Roots, the PopUp Performance Kitchen of Mero Cocinero Karimi, Iranian/Guatemalan host of The Cooking Show con Karimi & Comrades. This interactive culinary journey honored cultural recipes of the past in the spirit of a Dia de Los Muertos celebration.  Mero Cocinero and his crew from ThePeoplesCook.org transformed the Intermedia Arts gallery for 6 nights (with a special Dia de los Muertos dinner on November 2), serving delicious dinner and hilarious performances. Ofrendas (altars), created by local artists were also on display.

Viva Las Roots is part of The Diabetes of Democracy Project, a storytelling and performance project promoting cooking as a cultural movement to combat the rising epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes and improve the world's health. Working with lead writer/producer Robert Karimi (current Artist in Residence at Intermedia Arts) and local culinary geniuses, Mero Cocinero’s secret menu is derived from cooks who saw food as medicine.  “Day of the Dead is a time to both laugh at death and celebrate the gifts of our ancestors. This will be one show that will feed you and leave you hungry for more. Be prepared to move, eat & laugh.” – Mero Cocinero Karimi
