Yawo Attivor is a native of Togo, West Africa on political asylum in the United States after fleeing his country in 1992. Along with being an activist, Yawo was the leader of the movement then-known in Lome as the "Mimi" (International Movement for International Music). Yawo moved to the Twin Cities in 1999 and started working on a solo album that was released in 2001 under the title, "Celebrate." Since moving to the Minneapolis area, Yawo has organized various events to raise awareness about the situation in his motherland and written affidavits to support the application of Togolese political asylum seekers. As part of the "Moving Lives" project, Yawo will share his experience as a musician/activist living in the dictatorship of Togo. Yawo also hopes his travels with the international organization of "Up With People" will allow him to share, with the different tribes of the world, music that crosses cultural boundaries.
