| Marlina Gonzalez comes from a family of artists whose works have always been informed by the social and political milieux of cultures and histories. She is strongly inspired by her grandfather who was a political prisoner and labor movement leader and who refused to succumb to many institutions’ attempts to squash his right to free expression. She left her native country in the midst of Martial Law, at a time when all TV, radio and print media were controlled and censored by the government. In the U.S. she found herself identifying with other communities of color and began to present the work of other artists as a curator. Marlina is now ready to share her stories about how art has been the most effective channel to counteract political forces that have tried to oppress her. She will use film, video and oral storytelling to portray these stories and to find her own audience. | ||
